NEL – More natural gas for Europe

The North European Gas Pipeline, NEL, will connect Germany and north-west Europe with the major natural gas reserves in Siberia via the Nord Stream pipeline. This will enhance supply security.

NEL will pick up the natural gas in Lubmin near Greifswald and transport it over 440 kilo-meters towards the west. NEL will link the Nord Stream Baltic Sea pipeline with the exist-ing trans-regional pipeline system in Germany, thus strengthening Germany’s role as a natural gas hub within Europe.

Demand for the most environmentally friendly fossil fuel is set to rise further. But since production in Europe is declining at the same time, natural gas will have to be imported from abroad. Nord Stream, NEL and the second connecting pipeline for Nord Stream, OPAL (Ostsee-Pipeline-Anbindungs-Leitung – Baltic Sea Pipeline Link), will go a long way to bridging this gap.
